Instagram Gave Every User a Dial to Pick What They See. Suddenly, Being a Narrow Niche Coach Pays.

'Your Algorithm' now runs across Feed, Reels and Explore in English. The coaches who benefit are the ones easiest to categorize.

Instagram spent this year quietly handing the steering wheel to the audience.

'Your Algorithm' is now live across Feed, Reels and Explore, giving people control over their experience globally, accessible through the two-lines-with-hearts icon in the upper right corner. It works as one unified system — tell Instagram what you want more or less of, and recommendations update everywhere at once.

Instagram tested it on Reels in October 2025, expanded to Explore in April, and extended the topic controls to the main Feed after that. Users can view the topics shaping their recommendations, add or remove them, and prioritise up to three areas they want more of.

That last detail is the one that matters to you.

Three slots. That's the whole game.

For a decade the advice to coaches was to widen the net. Post the motivational quote. Chase the trending audio. Say things broad enough that anyone might stop.

That advice now works against you. Audiences can actively tune out your content category, not just your account — but the audiences who opt into your niche are pre-qualified, with higher intent than most paid targeting delivers.

The read for creators: get even more specific within your niche so you land directly in your target audience's curated feeds.

"Coaching" is not a topic anyone types into a preference panel. "Divorce recovery," "sales calls," "marathon training after 40" — those are. Instagram even shows the receipt now: when a post is recommended because of one of your interests, a label like "From Running" appears on it.

The second squeeze: borrowed content

While the dial was rolling out, Instagram tightened who gets recommended at all. Content reposted from other accounts without significant changes may face reduced reach and become ineligible for recommendations to people who don't already follow the account, and accounts that repeatedly post unoriginal reels, photos or carousels may no longer appear in recommendations to new audiences.

Adding a watermark, a border, a speed change, or reposting with credit does not meet the originality bar. Eligibility returns if most recently posted content is judged original over a rolling 30-day period.

The screenshot-quote carousel account just lost its distribution engine.

Adam Mosseri has been saying the quiet part out loud all year. He has written that "authenticity is fast becoming a scarce resource," and that the bar is shifting from "can you create?" to "can you make something that only you could create?"

One honest caveat

Most people will never touch this panel. Historically, users rarely adjust manual controls even when they exist, and Meta sees the feature partly as reassurance — an option people want for peace of mind, even if they seldom use it.

Which is exactly why asking is cheap and almost nobody is doing it. Remind your community to actively manage and refine their interests.

The line to put in your Stories this week, in your own words: Open Reels, tap the icon top right, and add [your niche] to your interests. Then you'll actually see this stuff.

That is opt-in distribution with no ad spend attached. Ask once a month. Watch who raises a hand.
