BetterUp Raised $570 Million. In 110 Days It Stops Selling Coaching to Individuals Entirely.

The best-funded company in coaching history is closing its direct-to-consumer business on January 31, 2027. Every route in now runs through a corporate contract.

The best-funded company in the history of coaching has 110 days left in the consumer business.

BetterUp for Individuals — the direct-to-consumer subscription where a human being could pay a monthly fee and get a real coach on video — is being switched off. As of February 1, 2026, BetterUp began winding down its BetterUp for Individuals subscription plans, and the option officially ends on January 31, 2027.

That is not a strategy memo. That is a date.

The dates, in order

New subscriptions and coaching sessions stopped being available for purchase on January 31, 2026, and edits to existing plans closed the same day. The last possible renewal for monthly, quarterly and bi-annual plans was July 31, 2026, and the program ends January 31, 2027.

So the window already shut twice before most of the industry noticed. Individual plans are no longer purchasable at any price; pricing questions now apply only to enterprise contracts, quoted per organization.

The help centre language is unusually final. BetterUp says the individual offering "is no longer able to accept new or returning members," and that if you cancel, you will not be able to return to a subscription plan or your account in the future. Flex sessions stopped being sold on February 1, 2026; the ones already bought are non-refundable and usable for one year from purchase.

The price band coaches are told they can't compete in

Here is the part that should interest anyone selling one-to-one work.

One widely cited breakdown of BetterUp's consumer tiers put them at $71 a month for one session, $119 for two, and $223 for four. More recent third-party summaries place the same three tiers higher: $89, $149 and $279 a month for Intro, Plus and Premium, which works out to roughly $1,068 to $3,348 a year.

Now the detail that reframes all of it. Those plans were built around one, two or four sessions a month, and each session was 30 minutes.

Do the arithmetic yourself. Four half-hour sessions at $279 is just under $70 per session. That is the venture-backed, 4,000-coach, FedRAMP-certified, $5-billion-valuation price point — and it is the exact band independent coaches have spent five years being told they could never undercut, outrun or survive.

BetterUp just decided it wasn't a business worth keeping.

$570 million, and the consumer line gets cut anyway

BetterUp has raised $570 million since launching in 2013. That includes a $300 million Series E in October 2021 at a $4.7 billion valuation, led by Wellington Management, ICONIQ Growth and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Coverage at the time framed it as a "nearly $5B valuation" story.

The company is not in trouble in the way the headline might suggest. As of August 2026, BetterUp reported more than 750 enterprise customers and over 4,000 coaches across more than 70 countries. It is concentrating on large enterprise contracts.

The enterprise math explains why. Third-party estimates put BetterUp enterprise pricing anywhere from $1,800 to $6,000 per employee annually — with no card declines, no churn at month four, no support tickets from one person at a kitchen table.

And analysts flagged the consumer margin problem years ago. One company breakdown noted that BetterUp's model of taking a cut from fees paid to coaches could lead to lower gross margins. A $71 subscription split with a human coach is a thin, fragile line item next to a 10,000-seat contract.

What happens to the members

They don't lose everything, but they lose the part that matters. When access ends, members keep unlimited access to assessments, reports and activities or resources, and lose the ability to schedule appointments, use the AI coaching feature, and message their coach.

BetterUp recommends members save all coaching work and message history before their plan's final end date — and there is no self-serve export, so it is a manual job.

The relationship is the thing being deleted. The PDF of your personality survives.

Where the demand goes

This is the quiet opportunity. The members on those plans were self-paying, already sold on coaching, already in a monthly habit, and already comfortable at $89 to $279 a month. Nobody has to educate them. They are being evicted, not converted.

Coaches on BetterUp's individual platform are independent professionals, and many are opening private practices as the program winds down. Competing tools have noticed — at least one platform comparing the shutdown to Practice.do, which closed abruptly and left coaches scrambling for a replacement.

The strategic direction is not subtle either. In August 2025, after acquiring Heyday and Practica, BetterUp released a pure AI coaching application. Its enterprise stack now runs as Lead (human plus AI coaching for top leaders), Manage (always-on coaching for managers) and Grow (in-the-moment AI coaching for the whole workforce, inside Slack and Teams).

Read that as the real story. The human coaching is being reserved for the people whose employers write large cheques. Everyone else gets software.

The argument that coaching was about to be commoditised by platforms always assumed the platforms wanted the volume. The biggest one just handed the individual buyer back to the independent market and kept the procurement department.

January 31 is a Sunday.
